The article deals with development of a technique that enables determining groundwater springs’ recharge and sanitary
protection areas based on hydrogeological and topographic maps. The proposed technique treats groundwater spring as sources for drinking water supply and thus allows purposeful organising their sanitary protection zones, as well as environmental monitoring and control measures. The technique has been validated on the examples of prospective drinking water sources, the Myronivskiy and Suvorivskiy groundwater springs in the Kharkiv region. It has been proved that catchment areas of groundwater springs can be delineated based solely on the current available knowledge on the landforms and hydrogeology structures of Ukraine using open cartographic information for building digital elevation models by means of modern geographic information technologies (GIS), without carrying special and costly hydrogeological surveys.
