The article deals with the reasons for protective concrete layer failure in reinforced concrete structures. It is the common idea that the protective concrete layer does not influence calculative strength of reinforced concrete structures, so its dimensions are adopted constructively depending on the diameter of the working armature. Its task is to protect the armature from contact with the aggressive medium. In the process of long-term service of the structure the protective layer loses its functional purpose and the armature starts to corrode, which results in degradation of a reinforced element. Thus, the aim of this work is to show the influence of physical processes and minimal force impacts on formation and opening of unstable cracks on the first stage of service. In order to fulfil this task the methods of failure mechanics are used, which study the properties of materials in micro volumes. So, the issue is not the concrete corrosion of the protective layer, but its failure due to the impact of the inner force on the first stage of the element lifecycle.
